"This is one of those most rare cases when military exploits, already incredible in their significance and scale, are accompanied by equally poignant ideological declarations which are understandable to everyone in Russia."

Wagnerism, or Prigozhin thought, is the ideology of Wagner PMC and its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin that advocates for totalitarian control and extreme violence. Prigozhin believed that radical measures are necessary in order to ensure Russia’s victory in the war against Ukraine. He has called for declaring complete martial law, new waves of mobilization and total economic mobilization of Russian industry. Prigozhin has also said that Russia should emulate North Korea and close all of its borders.

Prigozhin has criticised Russian elites for leading public, luxurious, carefree lives while ordinary Russians fight in the war. He believed that Russian Ministry of Defense has failed at conducting the war against Ukraine, and Wagner, as the more effective fighting force, should take control. As such he has opposed the subordination of Wagner to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Wagner has extensively employed convicts in Ukraine and has used them in attritional, human wave-style assaults in order to capture objectives, taking high casualties. Cases were reported when Wagner fighters were executed for disobedience. Wagner has been known for its brutality in Ukraine. It has executed POWs, and Prigozhin has allegedly ordered massacres of Ukrainian civilians and children during the capture of Ukrainian cities of Soledar and Bakhmut. Prigozhin allegedly had a preference for recording videos of the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Beliefs

Prigozhin believed that harsh realities of war in Ukraine require radical measures in order to ensure victory. This meant totalitarianism, ardent militarism, ultranationalism, anti-western sentiment, anti-ukrainian sentiment, and an acceptance of hellish nature of war. He has called for declaring complete martial law, new waves of mobilization and total economic mobilization of Russian industry. Prigozhin has also said that Russia should emulate North Korea and close all of its borders. Alexander Dugin has favorably compared Wagner PMC to Oprichnina.

Prigozhin’s criticism of Russian MoD (Ministry of Defense) and elites was notably not equivalent to criticism of Putin. According to a leaked image the Wagner Group’s founding charter included provisions to not go against the Russian nation and against “VVP” (Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin). After Prigozhin’s death, Putin, in his speech on August 24, has characterised him as a person with a “difficult fate” in which he has made “serious mistakes,”, but was nevertheless loyal up until his death.
