NDC-R System also called NDC-R model is an ultranationalist ideology that advocates for superiority of ethnic group Banyamulenge in the Kivu region. It appeared as a response to the actions of rwandan rebels in the region, and is also responsible for a huge number of war crimes.

History

These are militias unique to the eastern part of the DRC, formed ostensibly to protect villages from attacks by Rwandan forces and Rwandan-backed rebel groups

In September 2014, Guidon split from Nduma Defense of Congo (NDC) and created a rival faction called the NDC–Rénové along with other NDC commanders, in particular the movement’s head of intelligence, Gilbert Bwira Chuo, who became his deputy. Its creation was due to internal disagreements over the sharing of revenues and leadership in the original group of the NDC. Sheka who was the leader at the time of the NDC kept annoying his associates over his alleged tendency to take sole credit for their exploits and over the uneven sharing of funds. This along with his tendency to not pay his soldiers led a lot of his forces to leave him to join Guidon and all of his other co-conspirators into the new group. For a long time it was considered the key group in Kivu, until its army was defeated in November 2020 by forces of the DR Congo.

Anti-Americanism

The NDC-R has a negative attitude towards the USA believes that the USA is a imperialist power that has exploited and oppressed the Banyamulenge people. The NDC-R also accuses the USA of supporting the Rwandan government, which the NDC-R believes is responsible for the deaths of many Banyamulenge people.

Ethnic relations

NDC-R believes that the Banyamulenge people have the right to self-determination and that they should be able to manage their own affairs. At the same time, they are extremely chauvinistic against other ethnic groups, especially the Hutu people. They also often call for the federalization of the DR Congo in order to give the Banyamulenge people greater autonomy. However, the group is ready to deal with all its enemies, regardless of ethnicity.

Christian Fundamentalism

The war in Kivu was reflected in religion and attitudes of NDC-R towards other religious groups in the region, especially after the intensification of Jihadist forces. NDC-R see themselves as fighters against evil in the era of the apocalypse, they despise all other faiths except Christianity, which often leads to bloodshed and numerous deaths of civilians.

War crimes

Recruitment of child soldiers

From 2014 to 2017 NDC-R recruited approximately 164 children, including 144 boys and 20 girls. 46 of them were under 14 years old.

Inside of area of NDC-R's control survivors has claimed that several fighters would take girls away and rape them. Sometimes this would be a one-off a thing or in other cases, the women//girl would be made into a sex slave. And if they ever resisted they would be shot. ̶T̶h̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶g̶i̶r̶l̶s̶ ̶c̶a̶n̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶1̶4̶ ̶y̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶a̶g̶e̶.̶

Labour and financial levies

Adults in the group's territory are forced to pay a 1,000 Congolese francs (US$0.60) protection tax per month. Adults and children are also forced to work in a practice the group dubs "community labour" (salongo). Men and boys in Masisi are forced to work for one or two days, and for their participation they are given a token known as a jeton. If a civilian is found to have no jetons on them and they are stopped by the NDC-R, they will kill that civilian.

Hutu massacres

NDC-R Responsible for the destruction of several Hutu villages in North Kivu, which affected a huge number of people. In 2019, war crimes caused a massive exodus of ethnic Hutu. Refugees, who have become a mass phenomenon in the region, have also often become victims of NDC-R attacks.

Illegal gold mining

NDC-R controls some of the largest gold deposits among all the rebels, which gives NDC-R a financial advantage. As usual, innocent people are responsible for the extraction of gold, who, under the threat of death, are forced to work until exhaustion.
