Dead Internet Theory refers to the idea that the majority of online users are not real people, with most posts on social media being generated by bots and fake profiles. Hence most interactions are 'fake' and created only to artificially inflate view counts and likes, or to promote specific content by making it seem more popular than it actually is.

The idea of mass communications media being used as a tool to reinforce the idea of a consensus around a certain perspective (when there isn't one) may be thought of in connection to Noam Chomsky's works on propaganda, particularly Manufacturing Consent.
