Attribution Guide

Below, request for icons to be transferred here, with a link to the file page on the other wikis You can also find a list of the most-needed files at Special:WantedFiles, but please read the following guide before uploading.

DO NOT UPLOAD ICONS WITHOUT PROPER ATTRIBUTION! INSTRUCTIONS CAN BE FOUND HERE!

Whenever uploading an icon, or any other file for that matter, that wasn't made by yourself, you have to attribute it in order to comply with Copyright. For this, check the license of the file you're trying to upload, and then use the correct template during upload.

Which license is correct and when?

My own works

If you made an icons, or any other file yourself, you can upload it without any attribution / template. Files uploaded to the FreePCB wiki enter CC BY-SA 4.0 licencing automatically through upload. If you want your art to be published under a different license, please Write the following:

This file was made by [YOUR NAME] and is, unlike other files made by FreePCB users, not licensed under [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ CC BY-SA 4.0]. Please instead refer to the [LINK TO THE LICENSE NAME OF THE LICENSE] license when reusing this file elsewhere.

Dispite some claims, even if your icons uses the 23x23 Polcompball template, you must not attribute your usage of as it does not meet the originality criteria for copyright eligibility.

Polcompball and Polcompball Anarchy (Miraheze/Wikitide)

Most wikis, including all ball wikis, the most relevant for us being PCB, PCBA as well as Chromeball, operate fully under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, as can be seen on the bottom of all these wiki's pages.

If you're uploading a file from the Polcompball or Polcompball anarchy wikis please use the following template:

For files from Polcompball Anarchy, make sure it says PCBA instead of PCB.

Polandball

Don't reupload Polandball icons, they look like shit and follow a different format.

Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons

If you're uploading a file from Wikimedia Commons (or Wikipedia) to the wiki, please first check the 'Licenses' section of the file description page. If it says that it's 'Fair use' or copyrighted, you CANNOT upload the file to the FreePCB wiki. If it says something you don't understand, ask the mods.

If the license says anything else however, usually GNU or CC BY-something, you're fine. Just follow the instructions shown on the image here, and copy the marked text when uploading the file to FreePCB. It should then looks something like this:

Then, at the end of the text, add:

[[Category:Attributed Files]]

If what you copied looks very different, please ask a mod before uploading.

Unsplash

If you want to use a free stock photo from the website unsplash.com, check that the file actually uses the 'Unsplash License' (which 99% of files do). If it does, you don't have to attribute anything as it complies with our project. You can still link the Unsplash license or write the Author's name in the file description if you want, but that's not necessary.

OpenStreetMap Screenshots

OpenStreetMap screenshots must follow the OSM's Open Data Commons Open Database License, that means writing the following text when uploading a screenshot:

Google Maps & Earth Screenshots

Screenshots and/or exported images from Google maps, Google earth, or Google Earth Pro, must be attributed according to Google's Guidelines. That means you can upload the file without writing any text, but you have to edit the file in a program like Paint or Paint.NET to add the attribution text into the image itself. If you export a file from Google Earth Pro that is done automatically for you, just don't crop it out and you're good.

Screenshots from Google Street view are NOT allowed to be uploaded to FreePCB due to Google's license.

Other service

If you've obtained the file from a different service, please check the service's licenses. If you can't find a explicit reference to a license, ask the mods.

If it is a license that isn't mentioned on this page, click on the license link to make sure it complies with the project, if you aren't sure that it does, ask a mod.

Many files use the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, most of them relevant for this wiki, are those from PCB and PCBA. Files from other sources that use the same license, can also use the template however.
