History
Pērkonkrusts started in the pre-war Latvia as the Ugunskrusts (Firecross) which would later get banned and be succeeded by the Pērkonkrusts. During its time, it was gaining lots of popularity. In 1934 however, the Latvian government had banned the Pērkonkrusts party. After the 1934 Latvian coup d'état, where Kārlis Ulmanis became the radical dictator of Latvia, the leader of the Pērkonkrusts (Gustavs Celmiņš) was exiled in 1937. In 1941, when USSR occupied Latvia, members of an illegal Pērkonkrusts movement were arrested and sent to Gulags in Siberia. When the Germans came and occupied Latvia, surviving members of the Pērkonkrusts were given jobs as SS officers and took a big part in the Latvian holocaust. However after the Germans found out that the Pērkonkrusts was involved in anti-German activities, they were all sent to a concentration camp in Bavaria, which ended the Pērkonkrusts for a very long while until a new Pērkonkrusts was created in Latvia when the USSR fell apart. It Was Banned Again In 2006, And Was Renamed To The Gustavs Celmiņš Center. It Name Remains To This Day.
