Rockefeller Republicanism is an ideology stemming from a subgroup of the US Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination Republican Party in the 1930s-1970s that held more moderate and Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination liberal views on domestic issues than the rest of the party, similar to those of Nelson Rockefeller, former Governor of New York (1959-1973) and Vice President (1974-1977).

History

Thomas Dewey, the Governor of New York from 1943 to 1954 and the Republican presidential nominee in 1944 and 1948, was the leader of the moderate-wing of the Republican Party throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, battling more conservative Republicans led by Senator Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination Robert A. Taft of Ohio. With the help of Dewey, World War II General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the nominee for the election of 1952 as well as became the leader of the moderates. After Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, the Governor of New York, emerged as the leader of the moderate-wing of the Republican Party, trying to run for President in 1960, 1964 and 1968, but ultimately lost to Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination Richard Nixon, Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination Barry Goldwater and once again to Nixon, respectively.

In domestic policy, RockReps were typically moderate to center-right economically, however they strongly rejected conservatives like Goldwater and some of their Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination laissez-faire economic policies while holding beliefs in Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination social policies that were often culturally liberal. They preferred the social security network and the continuation of Franklin D. Despite all that, RockReps opposed Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination Socialism and government ownership and were strong supporters of Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination big business and Wall Street, although they supported some Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination regulation on businesses. But instead of tightening business regulation, they advocated the development of a mutually beneficial relationship between public interests and the private enterprise. They supported both public and private investments in the environment, healthcare and higher education as essentials for a better society and economic growth in the Rockefeller tradition. They were strong supporters of public colleges, trade schools and universities with low tuition and large research budgets, and preferred to invest in infrastructure such as highways.
