Paleoconservatism, shortened to PaleoCon, is a authoritarian, right wing political philosophy and variety of conservatism started in the United States stressing WASP Christian ethics, nationalism, paternalism, regionalism, and traditionalism.
Economically, although Paleoconservatism supports market capitalism, they are also protectionists, in favor of tariffs, and advocate for economic nationalism in different measures. Paleoconservatism opposes the interventionist foreign policies advocated for by Neoconservatives.
Paleoconservatism was a term created to differentiate them from the new interventionist approaches that started even within Conservative parties, it was in high opposition the New Deal in the 1930s and 1940s as well as with Paleolibertarianism, a term created to unite Libertarians and Conservatives against the New Deal.
Historical Examples
Notable paleoconservatives include Pat Buchanan, Paul Gottfried, Tucker Carlson and Mel Bradford. Despite many misconceptions, Ronald Reagan was not a paleoconservative.
