Provoism is the Ideology of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA or "Provos") that advocates for the secession of Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom. The PIRA split from the Anti-Treaty IRA along with the OIRA in December of 1969 and were the main Irish Republican Belligerents in The Troubles. They were disarmed on the 28th of July, 2005.
Beliefs
History
The first IRA was created in 1913 and took part in the 1916 Easter Rising, and the War of Independence that proceeded. Eventually in 1922, the IRA split into the Pro-Treaty IRA, and Anti-Treaty IRA after the Anglo-Irish Treaty spilt Ireland between north (to UK), and south (Irish Free State). The Pro and Anti-Treaty IRA's fought the Irish Civil War with the Pro-Treaty Provisional Government winning. So the Anti-Treaty IRA was forced to go into hiding in both Northern and Southern Ireland, organising several riots in the North.
Eventually in 1969, the Anti-Treaty IRA split over a "National Liberation Front", with the Anti-NLFists formed the PIRA and the Pro-NLFists formed the OIRA. The PIRA then started to escalate violence in Northern Ireland which eventually led to Police Forces arresting anyone associated with Republicanism was arrested. This and Bloody Sunday drove up recruitment to the PIRA. In 1972 the OIRA called for a ceasefire leaving just the PIRA to fight in The Troubles.
In April 1998, the Good Friday Agreement, which was made to peacefully disarm the PIRA. By 2005, they had been disbanded.
