Sarneyism is an economically center-left, culturally moderate and democratic ideology, reprensentig the beliefs of the former Brazilian president, José Sarney.
History
After the end of the Military Dictatorship, the president who should have succeeded the dictatorship, Tancredo Neves, died before taking office, and the then Vice-President, José Sarney, taked office.
His government was marked by the extreme necessity to end the Hyperinflation after the Dictatorship, the reedemocratization of the Brazilian government, and the installment of Brazil as a regional power in the world. In an attempt to reduce the hyperinflation, Sarney created the Cruzado Plan; the plan included: Changing of the national currency from Cruzeiro to Cruzado, wage freezes, the abolition of monetary correction and the creation of unemployment insurance. Initially, the plan was successful and both inflation and unemployment decreased, but eventually the plan began to fail and decay. The government announced the Cruzado II Plan, but it caused an increase in prices. The inflation was over 20%, and the incumbent Finance Minister was replaced by Luís Carlos Bresser.
Bresser created the Bresser Plan, which included rising taxes, deactivating wage-triggers, eliminating wheat subzidies and postponing public works and other large projects. The plan failed and inflation got to the rate of 366% in 12 months. Bresser later resigned.
Personality and Behaviour
Sarneyism acts like his real life counterpart, José Sarney. He constantly reminds other ideologies about how Democracy and Liberalism are important. He can also be portrayed as someone who is extremely corrupt, and runs a local oligarchy at his home state, Maranhão. When the things go wrong, he creates a plan to end the problem but actually worsen it.
