Totalism is a fictional Socialist ideology from the Hearts of Iron IV game modification Kaiserreich based on a timeline-specific synthesis of Bolshevism with the Revolutionary Syndicalist thinkings of French writer Georges Sorel. It borrows from the latter's views, believing that trade unions should be the main vehicle for proletarian organization, seeking to achieve a revolution through a spontaneous general strike fueled by the myth[1] of its accomplishment. From Bolshevism it also gets its authoritarian tendencies, believing that until a worldwide revolution has been achieved the state must use all of its powers to counter the influence of capitalist nations as well as in developing its own productive forces, due to this it supports mass militarization as well as mass industrialization, with a heavy focus on arms production and urban infrastructre.

Despite being a nationalist, Totalism is emphatically not a reactionary, he is strongly opposed to Monarchy, Clericalism, and Imperialism. He is willing, just as the ideology of the Soviet Union in our timeline, to network with Socialist movements outside his home country (even if they are filthy libs) to help stoke or aid revolutions elsewhere.

History

In the Kaiserreich timeline, Totalism was formulated after the Entente's defeat in the Great War. The failure of the October Revolution to take hold in Russia meant Marxism and ideologies seeking to closely emulate his beliefs became less influential in leftist thought. The failure of the Entente governments to defeat the Central Powers and their subsequent loss of territory led to a heightening of nationalist and ultranationalist sentiments. The Syndicalist revolutions in Western Europe saw many discontented nationalists join their union congresses and parties. Out of this political situation, many of these nationalist Syndicalists looked to Sorel's writings for inspiration as well as looking up to the more centralist vision of Lenin in the east. In 1936, Oswald Mosley, Benito Mussolini, and File:Natsynd old.png Georges Valois (all Fascists in our timeline) met in London to discuss a united effort and platform for Totalism, settling on central coordination of the unions, a one party state, a culture of national unity, and an industrial focus of the economy to feed the military machine, codified in the Totalist Charter. Other ideologies that did not partake in this congress are labelled 'Totalist' in the game, but are not necessarily adherent to the tenets of the Totalism of the Totalist Charter, ranging from the likes of National Bolsheviks to orthodox Leninists.

  1. To Sorel a 'myth' is not a fiction but rather the expression of a movement's will to action.
