This article is about a common form of regular nationalism, for proto-Nazism see: Volkism.

Volkish Nationalism (based off of the German Völkischer Nationalismus), also known as Common Nationalism or Classical Nationalism, is a form of nationalism which is accepted as the proper definition of nationalism by most people, particularly in Europe, as well as by most native peoples.

It defines the nation as 'a people', or 'Folk' (Volk), a distinct ethno-cultural group. Said groups always share a common ethnicity and culture, as well as language, and often, but not always, also religion.

Etymology

The term Volkisch Nationalism comes from the German word Völkischer Nationalismus, a often mistranslated German political science term that is used to describe the Common Nationalism which bases itself on 'a people' rather than just ethnicity, culture, or other separate qualities. It's also referred to as Common Nationalism, due to being the most common definition of 'the nation' around the world, particularly in Europe and for other native peoples around the world. It is thus also the most common form of nationalism adopted by nationalists.

It has also been referred to as Classical Nationalism due to being viewed as a pre-revisionist form of nationalism that takes the definition of the nation for granted instead of trying to define it based upon isolated characteristics.

Beliefs

Definition of the nation

Volkisch Nationalism defines the nation by the 'Volk', a people. The definition is usually phrased as the following:

a group of people that share a common heritage, language, culture, ethnicity, and history; usually inhabiting a specific territory.[n 1][n 2]

Aspects of Nationalism

The primarily goals of any kind of nationalist ideology are as follows:

  1. The creation and maintenance of the nation-state; thus ensuring sovereignty and self-determination for the nation.[n 3]
  2. The definition of the nation ━ most important stepping stone in every nationalist movement.[n 4]
  3. Welfare and happiness of the nation, that means also putting members of the nation first.[n 5]

Personality and Behavior

Volkisch Nationalism wants self-determination for its (and usually also other) nations via a nation-state. It wants to care for said nation's people, and is kind to them. He likes being around his fellow more orthodox nationalists, but despises Civic Nationalism, who he believes misunderstands nationalism and thus leads to the destruction of nations.

Notes

  1. Heritage & ancestry, inherently ties into ethnicity, culture, and history.
  2. 'Culture' includes traditions, way of acting, and specific rituals.
  3. This means that the nation should be congruent with the state. It doesn't necessarily have to be a state, though in the vast majority of cases it is, other kinds of self-administering communities can also be strived for.
  4. Classical nationalism does this as per above, a definition accepted by most people.
  5. Caring for members of the nation, this is why some claim Nationalism to be inherently anti-capitalist.
  6. Quite biased, but still describes it decently well.
