Peasants' Republicanism

Peasants' Republicanism is the political system practiced by the Peasants' Republics what is now mostly north-western Germany, most prominently in Frisia.

The system was a reaction to Feudalism and a rejection thereof, instead placing the power in the hands of peasants. Sometimes a oligarchical system developed where a few families held power in the state and were the only ones allowed to vote (such as in Dithmarschen), other times the societies were more direct-democratic and communal in nature.
A constant however was that the peasant class owned the land they worked and had to pay little or no taxes.

Beliefs

Peasants' Republicanism is strongly Anti-Feudal and believes that all peasants should be free from it.

Some peasants' republics, like Dithmarschen, were very oligarchical in nature and politically ruled by a very few wealthy families. Others, like some in the Free Frisian Lands, were mostly communal and, according to some, even direct-democratic to anarchistic in nature.

Frenemies

  • Tribalism - Eh you served us well for some time, but when you united Jever it turned into just another monarchy.
  • Christian Theocracy - I love god, but I don't think he should run the state, at least not directly.
  • Anarchism - I don't know why people keep comparing me to you, but I suppose you're kinda cool.
  • Kritarchy - The judges are pretty much the only authority every Frisian accepts. But you kind of came back to bite us during the time of chieftains, where suddenly every judge was part of the aristocracy and not an elected and neutral observer.
  • Elective Monarchism - We are subjects of the Holy Roman Emperor, and we pledge to protect his empire from danger. Please ignore the second part of my name, your highness.

Enemies

  • Feudalism - REEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! STOP OPRESSING PEASANTS!!
  • Reactionary Socialism - Why would you keep the Monarchy and serfdom if you want to help the peasants? Lords obviously do not care about us, history has shown it time and time again!
