Statism is the belief that the political authority of the state is legitimate, and the state should thus exist. It is therefore characterized by the existence of a centralized state apparatus and government, thus a form of hierarchy, which puts it at odds with many anti-statist ideologies, in particular Anarchism.

The more control the state has, the more statist a ideology is; some forms of statism thus include things like taxation and Welfarism on the lower end, or things like ownership over the means of production and Authoritarianism on the higher end of the spectrum.
